January exam results?

Anyone else had some strange January results? We have just got back our AQA SCLY1 (culture and identity) paper. Last year our results were superb, we have taught the course exactly the same, same materials and the results are far, far lower.

Even some of our top students have gained low marks. As an examiner for this paper I am left scratching my head as to how this has happened.

Any advice on how you go about getting a whole centre remarked?

Re: January exam results?

For a whole centre remark - you need to submit a percentage in for a remark.... if these come back increased - then they will do the whole centre for free... beware the grades can go down as well as up...

I teach family & households - and the results were much better than I had hoped - sorry not the kind of comment you want back - but the grade boundaries were very tight.... a D and a C only a couple of marks in it.... you might go up via a re-mark when the boundaries are so close.

Re: January exam results?

Thanks for reply Hannah. The odd this is there seems to be no reasoning behind results. We have several students who fast-track sociology (they do AS & A2 together in one year). Many of these students have gained an A grade in their A2 paper and a c/d in their AS paper? Very odd. All the students in question also found the A2 paper far more difficult (as expected) and left confused by their AS result.

In your experience do whole centre remarks seem to pay off?

Re: January exam results?

Yes Matthew, we had some stange results too.

My A2 students sat SCLY4 crime and deviance and results were fantastic!

For SCLY1 results were no where near as high as last year when we got a high proportion of A & B grades.

Like you I have a few students doing AS and A2 in the year, and one for example got an A in SCLY4 but a C in SCLY1 which doesnt seem to make much sense!

So your not the only centre!!!
