This idea is from Helen Gibb's (follow me) mind and was lovingly penned on 31 July 2009.

My idea is ...

my idea is to start off inequality have a game of loaded monopoly.

what to do is let 3 peolple start off with loads more property than the others.make one super rich and 2 others a bit better off ie give them all the stations or amenities or both.Give these people more money as well.

it works really well the game ends quite qickly and people end prety much as they started.

if you have a student who everyone is happy to recognize is really clever or good at maths give them little and lets see how they do on merit? (they wont win)

follow it up with a structured discussion or debate and really draw out what they feel they ave learnt from the exercise.

Hi there, I just wanted to let you know I used but adapted your idea as Marxist monopoly for A2 theory students. I put in a pre-game round where the workers produce houses and get paid £50 per house by the building company. The building company get £5000 - normal players £300. Start playing but after a few goes, unfortunately this generation all die... leaving a residential care home bill of £50 to be paid. Then, the next generation have to assess their inheritance and give the government (ie the bank) 20% of their assett value. (this led to lots of remortgaging). And so it goes on. After a while, count the assetts up of the various players and discuss.. Sort of worked! I'm thinking I could split the bank and government into two next time... Anyway, thanks Kath

Thanks so much for feedback this sounds really great.I will definately give it a go ,my students will be very grateful to you for giving them a chance to have another game. I think they learn so much from this kind of thing and not just about sociology.
