This idea is from Helen Gibb's (follow me) mind and was lovingly penned on 31 July 2009.
A speed dating variation to explore culture and can be used as an ice breaker.
I give the students a list that says things like
Attitudes to:
religeon
soap operas
politics
sports
importance of family closeness
also what our family likes to do .....
things that are important to my family are......
at christmas we always......
these are prompts to help them to remember what to talk about when being speed dated .
then whole class speed date each other knowing they will be asked to describe another class members culture to the class.
(I have a bell i use for speed dating and similar activities, look out at boot sales.)
drawing names from a hat they each describe another class members family and culture. Then the class draw a spider diagram for each class member to represent their culture putting the most important aspects of that persons culture nearest to a centre circle.
It is quite amazing what you learn about the students and how varied and rich their individual families are.The students see this and learn that all family life is cultural.they often dont think of themselves as having a culture.
