Sally said Hi, for socratic dialogue I use groups of between 5 and 9, i pose questions on the bord for them to discuss around a theme. Usually groups deviate to more in depth related topics and start to question each other. I fix the groups for a variety of personalitites and often use props or a teddy so they have something to hold when talking and to throw to others when they want to speak. Basically can only talk when have the teddy. Regarding structures; i break it down into sub themes - inequalities, social groups and roles, social control and order. From there i link in the sociological theories.

simon mcconnell-poore said Hi James, I usually try to encourage students to evaluate one theory with another. e.g. A Marxist approach versus and Functionalist approach. I get kids to draw lists of strengths/weakenesses of theories using other theories. Also I try to get them to evaluate using an exam question. For example: "Assess the usefulness of different sociological approaches to suicide. (21 marks)" - Get them to write a paragraph explaining how 'useful' Durkheims theoretical perspective is to this. Then how 'useful' is his method? Then how 'useful' is an interpretivist approach (Douglas, Atkinson'). Get them to use the language of the question to force them to evaluate. Add all the paragraphs together and make an essay. Hope this helps. Simon
