They are in groups of 4 and they each have a bit of coloured paper. They then write a plan of what they would put in the essay individually. They then talk as a group and decide what the best bits are and stick it all on a big piece of A3 and then they have a master copy. I have also done the activity where they pass a piece of paper around the group and write a new paragraph answering the essay. At the end each member of the group has a essay with lots of points they can use. This works well with a small group. I have the example essay I used for the marking activity just before the exam practice bit - I will upload it now! Hope this has been useful! :-)

The exam practice bit looks similar to a real essay but you say you give these slides to students who work in groups. Is that correct? They write a plan based on the material from the PowerPoint and add in their own ideas deciding if they want to reject any of the PowerPoint bits as they go along? And they look at a sample essay before all this so they should have sufficient information to write their own essay. The link to the countdown conundrums at the end is great. How long does all this take? Sounds like a double lesson? Also, what do they do with the post it notes where they've written their questions at the beginning?
| On 30 March 2011 Jess Cadman (PM) wrote: Thats no probs. The Lesson plan goes like this: 1. post it note gets written and they put it on their desk. They dont have to say what it is until the end. 2. They do the card sort exercise and then they check it against the slide in the powerpoint. 3. They look at an example essay and highlight the AO1 points and the AO2 and mark it with their student mark sheet. 4. The exam practice sections are then given out in small groups. The writing underneath are actually items that have been taken from past exam questions and ones that I have written - They are NOT bits of essays. They plan the essay individually and they have 5 mins to do this, then they compare their plans in small groups and decide on the best bits and put them on a master copy which is then photocopied for their folders. 5. They then re-visit the post-it note and write an answer to the area that they were stick on. If they cant answer the question I explain the area. These are then stuck on the whiteboard and looked at as a class. This took me a double lesson and the other resources (card sort and example essay) are also uploaded so you can get them off here. I hope that has made it clear what I do, but if you have more questions - please feel free to ask! | |
